In 2013, the Tomie Ohtake Institute created Current Art (Arte Atual), a platform for artistic research of an experimental nature in which, by means of a question suggested by the Institute’s Curatorial and Research Nucleus – coordinated by Paulo Miyada -  a group of artists are invited to develop new work. With artworks by Adriano Costa, Arjan Martins and Juliana Cerqueira Leite the curators propose a questioning of the urgencies of our present time, and the attachment of our time to its own ephemerality. “In an epoch that resists planning its own future, or knowing its past, perhaps we have arrived at a moment to question the fleetingness of what is being propagated around us: what if nothing – no product, no body, no history – were treated as disposable?” analyzes Miyada. Juliana Cerqueira Leite makes her own body a mold, motor and matrix. Pieces of this body are sculpted constructing a bridge between the work and the identity of this same body. According to the curators the artist imprints sequences of movements and piles of gestures in sculptures that, on one hand go beyond the recognizability of her anatomy, and on the other, depend on the direct physical confrontation with the resistance and plasticity of the material she molds upon herself: the act does not express an idea, but impresses positions. “With such different strategies these three artists take risks and place themselves on a path of collision with the present not in order to capture it or overcome it, but to allow themselves to fracture with its counter-attraction, leaving traces of its voracity.” – Paulo Miyada
