One piece is connected to the other by poured plaster that runs over the casted shapes, confounding their geometry and consolidating their unity as a totem. The rest of the legs, from half calves down to the ankles, is substituted by aluminium stilts, both prosthetics and scaffolding at the same time. CONTRACTION 1, 2, 3
2019
All three Contraction sculptures reveal a body fragmented into its articulations. Wrists, ankles, knees, elbows, shoulders, and hips are disjointedly stacked as absence, as plaster totems. For this exhibition Cerqueira Leite has focused on the repetition of the human body in a contracted post that seems to repeat itself in different contexts and with different intentions. The pose is joined across its repetitions through the persistence of the human anatomy, which brings the body repeatedly into this position despite changes in culture technology, and time.
